Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR)

DLR is the Federal Republic of Germany’s research centre for aeronautics and space. Our 10,000 employees conduct research and development activities in the fields of aeronautics, space, energy, transport, security and digitalisation. The German Space Agency at DLR plans and implements the national space programme on behalf of the federal government. Two DLR project management agencies oversee funding programmes and support knowledge transfer. Climate, mobility and technology are changing globally. DLR uses the expertise of its 55 research institutes and facilities to develop solutions to these challenges.

Science vs. Project Management – Career Opportunities in Science Management
The growing demands and expectations of science management, for example in terms of interdisciplinarity, sustainability but also cost efficiency, rapid results and presentation of results to the public, create tasks and career opportunities beyond the purely scientific paths. As a project manager and group leader for project management at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), I invite you to an exchange about exciting challenges in the field of science management.

Details about the speaker Dr.-Ing. Friederike Fohlmeister
Vita: Friederike Fohlmeister studied electrical engineering and information technology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). In 2014, she joined the Institute of Communication and Navigation at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), initially as a research assistant in the field of satellite navigation. In this field, she completed her doctorate at TUM in 2021. Since 2020, she has been working as a project manager for strategically important major projects of the institute. Her current technical focus is on technologies for quantum key distribution with satellites, including the BMBF project QuNET. At the end of 2021, she also passed the Project Management Professional (PMP®) exam and has been leading the Institute's Project Management Group since April 2022. As head of the specialist group and the affiliated Project Management Office, she is responsible for building up and further developing the Institute's project management competencies.

Focus on personality and competence development
The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is a large research institution where shaping your career might be challenging. In this meetup, I will talk about my 11 years’ experience at DLR with focus on my path towards leading my own research group. We will discuss the importance of networking and being visible to reach your goals. Additionally, I will talk about the two main challenges I faced in my career: maternity and lack of diversity.
