Journalist, author and presenterHead of Afghan Service Deutsche Welle
Waslat Hasrat-Nazimi is a journalist, author and presenter. For over 15 years, she has been reporting for Deutsche Welle on Afghanistan, where she fled with her family as a child to escape the civil war. Since 2020, she has headed DW’s Afghanistan editorial team. Despite numerous restrictions on the ground, her team manages to bring independent information into the country and give people a platform to voice their opinions. Her expertise lies at the intersection of geopolitics, migration, identity and social transformation, with a particular focus on decolonial and intersectional perspectives.
In her new book, ‘Rausländer – Unsere Koffer sind gepackt’ (Rowohlt, 2025), she gives space to migrant voices and bluntly describes how racism, political rhetoric and structural exclusion are shaking confidence in this country. Her message: the alienation of people with international family histories is not just a personal experience, but a development that threatens democracy. She calls for a radical rethink and policies that not only manage diversity, but actively shape it.
Hasrat-Nazimi advocates for a society in which people belong not despite their history, but because of it. She is a regular guest speaker and moderator, most recently at re:publica, the b°future Festival and the Bundestag.
Through her commitment, she wants to make it clear that migration is not a crisis, but rather a reality, an opportunity and a future all at once.
