Naming the Violence: Feminicide, Media, and the Politics of Visibility
Beziehungstat, Ehedrama, Tragödie – relationship problem, marital drama, tragedy? How does media shape our understanding of feminicide? In this MeetUp, we explore the gap between reality and representation in cases of gender-based killings. Through examples from Germany and Turkey, we will discuss how language can normalize violence or make it visible. Participants will learn how media narratives affect public awareness, legal processes, and political action.

Details about the speaker: Sinem Nazlı Demir
Vita: Sinem Nazlı Demir is a crime reporter and author based in Germany and Turkey. She holds a master’s degree in Human Rights – Politics, Law, and Society from Fulda University of Applied Sciences and is currently a project assistant in the DFG-funded research initiative “SaFe – Shaping Future Society.” She previously worked in juvenile prison in Istanbul as a volunteer and worked in a high criminal courthouse as a crime reporter, focusing on cases of gender-based violence and child abuse. She authored her first book on femicide in Turkey and is currently writing her second book on the stories of girls who survived sexual violence. At Feminizidmap, she contributes to the team through her work in press and media relations.
