Barbara Massing was born in 1971 and is the mother of two daughters. She studied law and history in Hamburg and Berlin (Humboldt University). She completed her second state law examination in Berlin with a focus on media law. After working as a producer for ARD and WDR, she practiced as a lawyer specializing in media and internet law. From 2004 to 2006, she worked as a management advisor at ARTE Germany. Since 2006, she has been with Deutsche Welle. Starting as a distribution advisor, she then led corporate strategy for six years. She represented DW in the international advisory group “Science and Society” for the EU Commission for two years. Since 2014, Barbara Massing has been part of the management team as Administrative Director. The fully qualified lawyer is also a member of the supervisory board of the University Hospital Bonn, a member of the board of trustees of the TH Köln, deputy chairwoman of the supervisory board of the International Beethoven Festival, and deputy chairwoman of the shareholders’ meeting of the Bonn Institute. Other key areas of her work include digital leadership, new work, sustainability, and the promotion of diversity.
